Adaptive RT: Past, Present and Future
Adaptive Radiation Therapy (ART) has long been recognized as a transformative approach in radiation oncology, allowing for real-time modifications of treatment plans based on anatomical and functional changes in patients. From its early offline adaptations to modern online workflows, ART has evolved significantly with advancements in imaging, automation, and artificial intelligence. The integration of high-quality onboard imaging, robust multimodal segmentation, and advanced auto-planning has made ART more accurate and efficient. This evolution has reduced the need for extensive human resources at the treatment console, shifting the focus towards streamlined, software-driven automation.
Looking to the future, ART is poised to become the standard of care, driven by improved workflow efficiencies, reduced treatment times, and expanded accessibility. Innovations such as simulation-free and planning-free radiation therapy, coupled with advancements in synthetic CT and AI-assisted quality assurance, will further enhance the adaptability and precision of treatment delivery. As ART becomes more widespread, its adoption across various clinical settings will continue to improve patient outcomes while optimizing resource utilization in radiation therapy.
